gender & deception
10 minute video which illustrates what we've covered in class about gender and deception . I don't want to say exactly what it is in case I spoil it but it's relevant and worth watching (warning: it has lots of graphic sex talk so don't watch it if that's an issue)

Interesting, and I suspect there wasn't a happy ending.
What I could add though is that your title makes various assumptions. Specifically, if you apply Judith Butler's notion of the performativity of gender to this scenario then the notion of "deception" only applies insofar as Floyd is 'found out' - his biological sex repudiates his online persona - but only because he confesses the 'reality' of his situation. Had he not done so I think the distinction between 'truth' and 'deception' would have more difficult to draw; i.e. the performance (to follow Butler) had sufficient ontological 'weight' to negate what we would take to be the common-sense 'facts' - that Floyd is 'really' a man.
"What I could add though is that your title makes various assumptions."
you're making the assumption that I was refering only to Floyd in the title. It was just a description of what I felt were the most salient points of the video, I really hadn't given too much thought to it's relevance
So Descartes' notion is getting ever more expanded; it's now, "I feel therefore I think, therefore I perform, therefore I am....and am....and....am...(and possibly am)"
I like it.
Blimey, I nearly collided mid-ether with you there, Hal!

there should be a emoticon for that, there is for everything else.
*sniggers*
*plots one that's kind of...'arms extended out to emulate airplane soaring around then smacks into cloud of random pixels.....cue tweeting birds circling head'...*
from someone who finds it hard to see what all the fuss is about the penny has finally dropped....not before time I hear you all say! This clip made it sooooo much clearer, perhaps showing it earlier on for the poor sods coming up behind us will prove to be a good move.
Hi Quis :)
About bloody time! (Welcome aboard)Makes online deception so much clearer? Or cyberspace generally? (I agree though...it WILL be shown. Though saying taking my course makes you a poor sod is a little harsh!) :P
