The possibilities of Cyberspace?

Does cyberspace and virtual reality have the potential to take over the real world? And to what cost if it does?

Excellent film. Raises some really thought-provoking questions (even all those years ago). The tagline on the ad for the film is, if a little controversial, is an interesting insight into the hopes and beliefs of some for the future of cyberspace as rehab environments AND incubators for raising consciousness: "God made him simple. Science made him a genius".

There's no doubt that 3D virtual venues (the nearest thing we commonly have to fully immersive VR) are being widely used to facilitate all kinds of beneficial situations...therapeutic and educational. See this, for example: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7012645/

I recently heard of VRs being used to treat PTSD in veterans of the Iraq war too. http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bsc/nyas/2006/00001071/00000001/art00053

I don't doubt the obvious affordances of cyberspace for the treatment of certain psychopathological conditions but I sometimes struggle, at least at this period of history, to truly envision how the psychology 'normals' will be be 'altered' ina substantive and positive way.
